Fellowship Announcement

The GroundTruth Project and SiliconANGLE Media’s theCUBE are pleased to announce a new reporting fellowship on women in technology.

Two top, emerging journalists will be chosen for a month-long reporting fellowship in October 2016, which includes reporting from the Grace Hopper Celebration of Women in Computing in Houston, Texas. GroundTruth and theCUBE will collaborate on this fellowship with WGBH and Public Radio International’s “Innovation Hub” as a supporting editorial partner.

The fellowship will include two weeks of training and pre-reporting, one week of reporting at the Grace Hopper event and one week of intensive editing. Fellows will work under the mentorship and guidance of GroundTruth’s veteran editorial staff, including Digital Editor Rachel Rohr and Managing Editor Kevin Grant. Robert Hof, Editor-in-Chief of SiliconANGLE, will also advise fellows on reporting for the initiative.  

Leading the editorial oversight of the project is an advisory committee which includes Elisa Lees Muñoz, head of the International Women’s Media Foundation; Lara Setrakian, Cofounder and CEO of News Deeply; Matt Carroll, Research Scientist for MIT Media Lab and former Boston Globe ‘Spotlight’ reporter; Esther Wojcicki, Founder of Palo Alto High School Media Arts Center, former Vice Chair of the Creative Commons Board of Directors and Distinguished Scholar at Stanford MediaX; and John Markoff, a Pulitzer Prize-winning writer on science and technology for The New York Times. This team of advisers will be helping GroundTruth and SiliconANGLE as they build a wider reporting fellowship on covering technology to be called “TechTruth.”

“We support the mission of GroundTruth in developing a new, more inclusive generation of journalists to dig into under-covered stories about the social implications of technology and share these stories and ideas with the world,” said John Furrier, co-CEO of SiliconANGLE Media.

Fellows will go beyond the surface level of conference news to find stories that matter, exploring how technology intersects with issues of social justice. They will report live from Grace Hopper, contributing to audio and video broadcasts while pursuing short profiles, breaking news stories and an in-depth feature piece.

The GroundTruth Project is a non-profit media organization dedicated to training the next generation of journalists to produce innovative media that enlightens and informs. Headed by Charles Sennott, cofounder of GlobalPost and longtime foreign correspondent, The GroundTruth Project is committed to narrative storytelling across media platforms, including digital, radio/podcast, television and documentary film. Since 2011, GroundTruth has supported more than 100 emerging journalists in telling the most important stories of their generation.

TheCUBE is the broadcasting platform and community of SiliconANGLE Media, Inc.,  an independent media company that provides technology news and analysis as it’s happening. Founded by entrepreneurs John Furrier and Dave Vellante, theCube has a mandate to promote the highest quality and fastest news and analysis on innovation, entrepreneurship, and latest inventions. TheCUBE has broadcasted live at hundreds of most influential technology events around the world.

Innovation Hub is a public radio program produced by WGBH and distributed by PRI. Hosted by Kara Miller, it features the thinkers, researchers, authors and visionaries who are crafting our future. The show challenges conventional wisdom and showcases creativity in everything from health to the economy.

Qualifications

We are looking for forward-thinking new media journalists. We seek reporters who have the analytical skill set to understand and unpack the nuances of technology, and the creativity to frame tech developments with a fresh and socially relevant perspective. Exceptional writing skills required, videography or audio skills a plus.

As the opportunity is intended for emerging media professionals, we welcome applications from candidates with 1-5 years of digital reporting experience. The ideal candidate has demonstrated interest in exploring societal applications and implications of technology, in particular through the lens of gender.

Compensation

Fellows will receive a $2,000 stipend for the month. Domestic travel to conference and reporting expenses will also be covered.
