In honor of World Press Freedom Day, and in recognition of the importance of creating a culture of safety in journalism, The GroundTruth Project is hosting a free journalism security workshop at International House in New York City.

Date: May 3, 2016 — 9:30 am-2 pm

Location: International House, New York City

The workshop will be led by Frank Smyth, the founder and executive director of Global Journalist Security, and Judith Matloff, professor at Columbia University and expert on safety training for journalists. This workshop will provide a formal introduction to understanding and assessing potential risks of international assignments. The workshop aims to help young journalists develop situational awareness in relation to reporting across an array of challenging assignments, including coverage of civil unrest, infectious disease, and natural disasters. Attendees will receive acknowledgement of their participation in this program.

Workshop participants are also invited to a wider networking luncheon from 12:30-2pm at International House. The luncheon will feature welcoming remarks from GroundTruth founder and executive director Charles Sennott and reflection from ABC News correspondent Bob Woodruff, followed by a panel discussion with top emerging reporters.

Current journalism students and emerging journalists are welcome to participate in the workshop, but capacity is limited to 20 people.
